G’day all,

I’m looking for advises on how to seal a metal cabinet.

I’ve got a communication rack cabinet. For information it is a bit smaller than server rack cabinet (not as deep, just 60cm). I bought it half a year ago as my future server’s home. I decided to run a proper network around house and put my noisy server together with some other network stuff into this cabinet into the garage. Finally I did it, but… When I bought the cabinet I washed it thoroughly and leaved it in the garage. And now when I start putting network stuff into it I realised how dusty it is inside.

Now. What I want to do. The cabinet does not have a bottom (as usual), but in my case I’m not running cables under the fake floor (cables coming from the top). So I think of make a bottom from a sheet of plywood and seal it with silicone. I want to fix it 1cm from concrete floor just under the side windows. The side windows (there are 3 of them) need to be covered with fly screen to stop the dust. Then just above side windows (10 cm from the ground) I want to put one more sheet of plywood, but with the wholes for fans to pump air up. On the top of the cabinet there is a window for another couple of fans to pump air out.

The real problems are:
-The side panels could be taken of; I think to seal them with the expandable foam.
-The dors; the rear one could be fixed, I don’t plan to access it. The front one will be used, but need to be somehow insulated. No ideas how to do it as yet.
-The top; there is a space ~1.5cm between walls and the top that need to be somehow closed.

The Idea is that the only holes in the cabinet that should exist are: windows next to the floor; fans on the top; cables entry box on the top; and may be some ”not tight enough” around the front door.

I appreciate any advises/ideas/concerns on this problem.

Thanks.
