What would you call this ... ?
Once again I'm dragging my tail. I dropped around to see Homesy a couple weeks ago now. Given that I'd sharpened (pretty much) one saw, we'd arranged that I would come around and transfer the sum of my knowledge on the subject ... and it was the best three minutes I'd had in a long time.
However, what he didn't tell me was that he had become a fugitive. From these very forums. I had him down to rights ... being productive without either moaning or boasting about it on the forum. Disgusting. I gave him a piece of my mind. But then I had to get it back or would never have been able to type this rubbish.
It was large and lovely, with inlay (lemon) ... beautiful panels (tasmanian streaky myrtle) ... and jarrah. The top was peaked and decorative ... and I've seen people writing about their Queen Anne knickerbocker or Prince Frederick cigar humidifier, etc ...
so I had to ask ... simple question I thought: "What would you call this ... ?"
Simple answer, as it turned out: "A bookcase".
Oh.
In any case, with him tied up in a corner I was able to get off some shots ... (and he's refusing to do autographs).

Photo when finished
Thanks for your kind comments. I'll post a photo when it is complete. I wanted a bookcase with doors so its contents don't get covered in dust.
Tomorrow, I'm starting the doors (for the third time). I don't know how I messed up the second set but they are 100mm too wide. Measured three times, allowed for the tenons on the rails, back calculated the width and still stuffed up. Trimming 25 mm off each stile would leave the doors too weak for glazing and expose the tenon.
Once this bookcase is finished, I'll have to start another, 100mm wider, to use the doors.

Nearly finished
Here are a couple of photos. It is nearly finished, just need to fit the lock and bolt to secure the doors, fit some handles and give it a clean. A few more days (weeks).

Beautiful use of timbers. The three set each other off nicely and yet it is understated. Beautiful!!

That's excellent, Paul! Told you I liked it.
Is it too big to actually get in the house?

Paul

Finished Bookcase
I've finished the bookcase and moved it inside. Fitting the handles provided another design opportunity - the diamond inlay just below the handles. Note to self: look where the drill will exit the material before drilling the hole.
Here are the photos.
