Watch storage box in Australian timbers
I have made what is essentially a compartmentalized storage box. It's intended use is to hold a watch collection, though it could be used for any collection of individual pieces. The box is 600 mm long x 280 mm wide x 90 mm tall (and 107 mm with the lid)
The carcass is made from Red Gum, showing considerable figure. The dividers are of QLD Maple again showing beautiful figure. The lid consists of a fiddle back Tasmanian Blackwood border and a book matched Tasmanian Myrtle panel.
The finish is Organoil Hard Burnishing Oil. Each compartment is approximately 120 mm x 110 mm x 90 mm. The compartments shall be fitted with Black Leatherette pillows (100 mm square).

Rob

Very nice Rob Whole lot of figure going on there!!!
Out of curiousity, do you reinforce your mitred corners with anything or just rely on the glue???

Hi TTIT,
I'm not a fan of the small wedges of timber people put across the face of mitre joints, so I don't use them. I guess if I wanted to reinforce the joints properly, I'd either make them lock mitres or put a stopped spline into the joint.
The latter appeals, just haven't got round to trying it. So, yes I rely on the glue.
That said, I have some boxes which are mitred and not reinforced that have been in very high traffic situations for about 6 years and they are holding out just fine.
Regards,
Rob

I saw some of Rob's work first hand on Sunday, he's a very talented man and has an excellent workspace. Love the box Rob.

Thanks, Andy.
You can get felt covered pillows from eBay, just go looking for "watch Pillows or Bracelet Pillows".
You can get leatherette from a place called "Shop for Shops" They have a shop in Sydney. They're about $2-3 depending on whether they are 3" or 4" square. At least I think you can still.

Rob

Hi Andy,
I've just spoken to shop for shops and they carry the 4" and 3" all the time. The 4" are about $2.00 for 1-5 and drop down progressively till they hit $1.60 for 10 or more.
Regards,
Rob
