Pair of Jewellery Boxes - Silky Oak and Tassie Myrtle
Hello all,
I have been meaning to post these boxes since Christmas. I made them for a fella from the Qld Woodturning Society for him to give to his two daughters for Christmas. (those guys can only make things that are round!)
I wanted to have a similarity and I was very pleased with the result. One is Tassie Myrtle with Silky Oak trim and trays and the other Silky Oak with Tassie Myrtle trim and trays. Both feature Myrtle Burl lid inserts and pig skin in the 3 trays. Finished with Livos Oil. They are 300mm x 200mm x 140mm and have my now customary wooden hinges. (I find them so much easier than metal) and a timber lid seal.
I finished them on the 24th and father and daughters were pleased.
regardsBilly

I'm afraid it's only dedicated Woodworkers, who actually make exotic timber box's for a hobby, truly appreciate the time and effort that goes into their creation. 'I DO' appreciate both your stunning jewelry box's !! VERY well done. Thanks for sharing them with us.
I never forget anything I remember !!

Wow. I love those myrtle burls. I would love to know how those tops were constructed. Burl fitted into a groove in a mitred frame and this glued to an outer mitred frame?? Thank you for sharing, Ross.

They are 2 beautiful boxes. A lot of very precise work in them.
Do you make the wooden hinges or are they a purchased item?Dallas

Absolutely beautiful !! Well done, and many thanks for sharing
Did you wax it after the Livos oil application, and what sort of mixture strength did you apply the oil? Tremendous finish!regards,

Thank you all, a few answers.
Firstly Ross, the burl is sanded down to 6mm and inserted in the glued mitered 'picture frame' which is inserted in the sides. The trim is only 4mm deep so there are not 2 frames at all. The top is not glued in but 'floats' in the sides.
Hi Treecycle, the wooden hinges are made, quite simple to do and can be sanded / shaped to suit. Bamboo skewers are used for the pin and the wooden nails into the box. Sometimes I use brass rod.
Dengue, I use full strength Livos oil about 4 coats. It was the first time I had used it and I am not 'in love' with it. I normally use Liberon Danish Oil which has a slightly 'wetter' look. I don't usually wax because I prefer minimal gloss.
Thanks also to Pariss, I checked out your Pens, beautiful!
regardsBilly
