    Default Seal or not?

    G'day,

I made some bare timber cupboard door frames which I am going to install glass in.

I intend to silicon in the glass from the back. Is that a suitable solution and if so should I seal and paint the rebate where the glass will fit before I do so?

    Thanks in advance

Silicone doesn't care whether the wood is sealed or not. I'd paint/finish the rebate first, simply because it's easier & neater to paint the whole door before fitting the glass.

It's also theoretically better to seal the whole thing, to minimise uneven timber movement due to moisture absorption, but in this case that's really only a minor consideration.

As for fitting the glass itself, I'd put a small bead of silicone around the rebate, press in the glass and fit small quad/bead from the back. I don't trust silicone to hold glass in place by itself so the bead adds a secondary, mechanical fixture in case the silicone fails and, frankly, looks a LOT better.
I may be weird, but I'm saving up to become eccentric.
