how much shake/flex can a timber frame have?
hi guys,
my new timber frame to my house extension seems to rock a little more than it should when I push it.
basic timber frame extension to a semi detached house. New frame is 3m wide by 12m long with raked roof at 7 deg pitch (3m at high point and approx 2.3 at low). it extends past the back facade of the adjoining house by 4m and is a 90x45 600cts basic stud wall along the full 12m length with 8m of the 12m length a rigid connection to the adjoining house (with regular dyna bolts fixed to the parti double brick wall). the opposite wall is 140x45 600cts which also runs 12m with the rafters stiffening it by the rigid connection of the opposite parti wall.
my issue is that the 4m which extends past the adjoining house doesnt get a rigid connection to the brick wall and rocks a little more than i think it should when I give it a shake. I wouldnt say it would fall down in strong wind but i feel it probably should be a bit more rigid than it is. it is essentially a 90x45 by 3m high on one side and 140x45 x 2.3m high on the other with 150 mm LVL rafters locking it together. I would have have thought with 8m of the structure tied back to the adjoining house would be enough to lock it down strong. the 8m section which is connected directly to the adjoining house is rock solid but the 4m which extends past it is not.
i should note that there is no end wall (at the end of the 4m extension) which would brace it. i have wall to wall glass doors planned with a triangular highlight window above I am hoping would stiffen it.
i should also note that the engineer originally worked off a single skin brick wall on one side (the side with the adjoining house) but I changed to timber frame for various reasons and with approval from the certifier and verbal ok from the engineer.
any ideas on what could be an easy fix for this or even if it is an issue?
cheers
