Mini Stereo's

G'day servants eer I mean fellow contributors....

Ok, so with time on my hands I think of things I need, well really don't need, but want. And currently on my list is a new stereo / cd player for the master bedroom.

Problem is I want something that can just hang on the wall. And after visiting a couple of electrical shops there really dosn't seem to be much available actually nothing available.

Everything I have seen in the mini hifi section are small units, but they are very deep units which would render them useless to hang off the wall.

Now I know I have seen units made specifically to go on the wall and so I thought I would try a local audio specialist (todds) with no luck, well actually about $4500 latter I could have had something.... :eek: But it still wasn't what I really want...

So anyone out there know of somewhere that might stock or order something like this....I mean in todays society of asthetically pleasing streamlined appliances there must be one manufacture making something reasonably priced...

Or BOSE, another high end make, they design systems that look good but you pay for the name.

Hi Shane,

How about a little lateral thinking? Why not a system which is totally concealed from view, apart from some discrete speakers and operated via remote control? The CD player if that is what you want, as opposed to a hard disk/iPod type thingy could be place in a cupboard somewhere. I don't know of such a system but am looking around for something of that nature for myself.

Just a thought.

Yup, or even grab an old PC and press it into service as a sound system. One can fit a 'huuuuge' number of songs on a hard disc as MP3 files.

I've had a car radio as my job radio for a number of years. Put the radio, a couple of speakers, an antenna and a 12v motor bike battery into a ply box. Works a treat and is very portable. I'm seriously thinking of buying a new car radio with remote control to replace the original.

I can't understand why Dewalt haven't included a remote in the latest version of their job radio. They are becoming very popular.

I'm with Majorpanic on this one. Bang & Olufsen are the only way to go, superb quality, perfect sound and the best looks money can buy. But be prepared for the heart attack when you hear the price, but you get what you pay for right?

You do get what you pay for but only up to the point beyond which you have to ask yourself how much extra bang youre getting for the extra dollar.

My personal preference is the Bose Lifestyle systems mainly because they're unobtrusive and they take up bugger all space. They do however lack a bit in the bass department but if youre not into Doof doof music then its not a big issue.

My choice if money wasnt an issue would be the Perreaux systems made in NZ....especially their top of the range gold plated amp/preamp/CD player set. Veeeeery nice.

Bose dosn't seem to have a wall mounted solution on there websites. And I actually like the idea duckman suggested, but unfortunatly its not practicle in my situation, though its going to get some further investgation.

Problem is I just know B&O are going to kill me with their pricing but its worth a look I guess, so off to the valley sometime soon.

If you know what model of B&O stereo your interested in, then I have the 2002 price list if your interested in just a ballpark figure. They have probrobly changed the prices a bit, but in general, they stay the same. The cheapest stereo you will buy from B&O is the Beosound 1, and at $2290 you still don't get the remote control, which is an extra $380. On top of that you are going to have to pay the doctors fees and the price of the heart medication that you will have to buy

But if I was going to go out and buy one, and i didn't want to pay too much then I do know B&O used to sell 2nd hand units. That's what my dad told me anyway, he's bought B&O all his life, but i don't know if they still do it. The last one he bought was the beocenter 7000 sometime early in my life, i was only a tiny kid, and it's still going today. But technology sure has surpassed the old thing. But in my opinion, a good in between stereo is the B&O Century and at $2890 (including the remote this time) it's a good little unit that should last you a nice long time, plus give you some of the finest sound you can get.

haha..yeah thats sort of the price range I was thinking they would be charging....The one I was looking at was the beosound 3000......but for them sort of dollars I can think of other more important items to buy. specially when I already have a damn good (imo) yamaha setup in the lounge.

Yeah, i thought that was the sort of reaction you would have had, almost everybody has that reaction But the beosound 3000 is a very nice unit, and at $3750 it had wanna be. But you think that is expensive, you know the one with the 6 cd holders, the beosound 9000? well it goes for $7200 and i don't even think that comes with speakers. One certainly has to have alot of dough to be able to buy the top of the line ones from B&O. Here's something to think about when you can't sleep, their plasma tv set goes for...yep you gessed it, $39500. I ask anybody here on this forum, DO YOU OWN ONE OF THESE TV'S?????????? If so, firkst of all, you are a lucky bastard, and second of all, if that's how much you would spend on a tv, then mate i would love to see your workshop.

If I spent that much on a TV I wouldn't need a workshop, I'd just fly all of you over to help me out.
In the meantime I will stick with my humble NAD, never really liked B&O that much.
An aquantaince had one, well, he drove a Saab as well which tells us a lot, quirky fickle pieces of machinery that they are.
Probably becoming too opinionated now...

Have a look at the Bose "Wave" system with a radio and CD/DVD player.

It's the world's most expensive clock radio, but really sounds the part and is not too bad at the price!

This sounds like an excellent opportunity to cable the entire house (speaker wire is cheap) and hook it up to your Yamaha gear, install speakers and volume controls in every room and Bobs your Aunty!
