Weipa Queensland
Hi guys,
I'm thinking of applying for a job up at Weipa, hoping someone here can give me some general info on the town.
I know it's up in the gulf, is it 4WD territory or could I get by with my BA Falcon - obviously I couldn't go bush, but could I get by around town and get there ok.
I have a 650cc cruiser, would I be able to use this around town.
I know it's croc territory up there, how bad is it in terms of walking the street or fishing.
I know it's a mining town, how does it compare to Dysart which is where I was last year.
Thanks
Paul

Its 10 years, almost to the day since I left Weipa, so things have probably changed a bit since then.
Your Falcon and cruiser will be fine for around town, there are plenty of conventional vehicles up there, a 4 wheel drive is handy for going bush for fishing and camping. But you will still be able to access some fishing spots close to town with the Falcon.
As for driving it up there, if the road has just been graded you might be right, but with a bit of rain around, it will make it very difficult for you. Best to speak with someone who has done the trip recently. That road can change dramatically overnight with some rain. Some advice from a local would be best, maybe even ring the Police station up there and ask about the road conditions.
OK. I just spoke to a guy who drove the road to Weipa in November, he said the road was good then, but would be no good at the moment due to all the rain. He said its bitumen all the way to Laura now, so thats a big improvement since I last drove that road.
Best to fill any spare car space with essentials, like soap , shampoo, washing powder, beer , rum etc. You will notice the difference in price for these up there,. compared to what you are used to paying.
If you like the outdoors you will have a ball up there. I did.
