Stripping and refinishing old doors
Hey all
I'm currently renovating an old 20s apartment with lots of wood that has been painted many, many times. I want to get it back to raw wood to enable re-staining. I've stripped the paint off using a heat gun and then have applied 2 coats of paint stripper to remove the stain. There is still quite a bit of dark stain left in the timber. Does anyone know of a product that will completely remove the stain ready for restaining? A friend recommended caustic soda. Will I be able to re stain the wood if I use this?
Thanks
Peter

STAIN REMOVAL
Peter,
There are a lot of products to try. I have had good success with taking ink stains out of table tops with household bleach. This may provide an answer. Use sparingly in an unobtrusive place first. The bleach will need to be taken off with a damp rag after use. Be aware that this approach may require treatment to the whole door to get an even restaining.
