Just wondering Al - do they have a requirement for practical work experience to get their degree over here?

I had to do 800 hours in mechanical engineering related fields for mine - all had to be written up and was assessed.

One job I did was with the Geothermal Power Station north of Taupo in NZ. Got it by cold-calling them - perhaps something Al junior could try with the local stations (Gippsland etc). Worth the experience alone.

    Blatant hijack ahead

About 40 years ago I was hitching in that area and got stranded. Was picked up by a bloke who worked at the power station. Kindly invited me to stay with his family if I'd help him collect some timber, which naturally I did. Turned out it was some timber he'd knocked off from the power station & stashed until an opportune moment.

Nice bloke & nice timber too.

It is for this reason that to this day Alex can not ever return to NZ.

Gotta be careful of timber around there - so much mineralisation from the geothermal wells and natural vents etc, I'd imagine it can be like finding rock embedded in the cracks of the tree.

Took some photos of a branch near a vent - was so covered in minerals it looked like coral, rather than wood.

    Al,

Schlumberger wireline often hire electrical engineers as wireline engineers on oil rigs. Youre son would probably have to be after a permanent job but they might give him a bit of work experience. Look in phone book for their contact details. Theyve got offices in Melbourne, Sydney and Perth.

I was offered a job with them to be a mining engineer (think it was oil exploration to be exact) a number of years ago - good company to get into if you don't mind travel, and money!

Always wondered where my life would have headed if I had taken up the offer....

    Al,

I might have a possibility in communications engineering in Hawthorn not far from Camberwell junction.

Not power, more like electronics and measurement plus a bit of design but let me know if you wish to pursue.
