Another Boring DRUM SANDER BUILD ....
After tiresome sanding of planer snip, tool marks etc.... I think it is time to build a wide drum sander.
I have already started and have the frame welded and a few minor additions.
I want it to have motorized feed table adjustable and an adjustable drum motor. It will be 36" with 6" discs for the sanding drum.

It is actually quite smooth and pretty quiet. IT sounds loud with the mic next to it but its not really that loud.
I can balance a nickel on edge while it is running. Pretty smooth but we will wait until we get the drum put together.

Not boring at all - I'm about to start building a belt sander and I'll start a WIP on it so we can be boring together
Some questions:
- what size/type/HP/RPM motors are you using?
- are you planning and variable/speed control on the motors
- I can't see any belt tensioning mechanism for the drum motor - is that to come or are you just using a fixed position?

Looking forward to seeing the drum sander and the belt sander WIP. I had no idea that these could be built in the workshop - looks very interesting

Not sure on motor yet. It is a 1 HP on there now. I have a 5 HP 3 phase I will use a VFD on probably. I also have a big DC motor I can use and a control circuit to control speed. Not sure yet.
The motor is mounted with a heavy duty hinge and it is the weight used for tensioning now.
I have a half HP DC motor that will be used to turn the feed table. I already have the control circuit for the DC motor.

Very interested to see the progress...
I'm planning to build one about 1000mm wide..
got the 2hp motor, 1" solid stainless steel shaft, 70mm pulley for the motor..
getting 38mm square steel for it.. will be more on a primitive side.. as in table will be just a thick board.. with screw adjustment for height..
Looking forward to pinching some ideas and how-to's from you

Cool. That's a tall order. 1000mm wow... Mine is 36 with 1.25 and I don't think I could have gone further.
doesn't flex at all and with the 6" discs epoxied to it I don't think it would either.
Here is the start of the discs. I am building this at the same time I am building my panel saw. I may be getting a Bridgeport cnc I have to rebuild coming in but that would help in making parts for these.
With all this building making and maintenance, I have no time to use my machines making wood stuff which is why I got into this.... What's the point? I digress.....

Some Notes:
The top with the dust collection will have a interlock switch so when the top is removed no power will reach the motor preventing it from spinning.
I will have two guide rollers to hold down the stock, one before it hits the drum and one right after. I will install a switch on the roller guide on the entry side so when it is pushed up farther than it ever should be by a piece of stock, it will e-stop the motor.
My Safety kick for the week. This comes from reading over there in the drum sanding forum..... )
