Hi,

I'm stripping back some hardwood architraves and skirting boards and noticed a layer of timber varnish or oil under 2 coats of paint. The 2 coats of paint have not bonded well to the varnish so I'm worried that when I paint them the new layer will also not bond very well. I think the varnish is the original 1930's varnish.

Are there any products out there that will prime the varnish to receive the new paint? Will your everyday primer such as Solver PSU do the job?

Does it matter what sort of varnish or oil it is?

Does it matter that not all paint layers have been removed, for example if some flakey bits of paint still remain that can't be removed without griding them away?

Thanks for your help.

Brandon.
