the difference is with a hvlp You use 20lbs of air with lacquer 2mm nozel and with a 10% thinner added With the old type for paint and lacquer The nozel would have to be the right size and the air for pain probly at least 70 on up to maybe 90 lb's depends on the thinner or how thick the mix is A little more info on what type of finish would be used I have done both hope this helps del

In short, High Volume Low Pressure guns use less air pressure and can apply the paint at a higher viscosity (ie less thinning required).

This results in a lot less over spray and less paint being used and/or wasted.

I have a Porter Cable unit that Carbatec used to sell and it does a great job.

They do however require a compressor that can deliver a fair volume of air, albeit at lower pressure.

Both spray Cost about the same depends on what price you pay Their are not that much difference The hvlp uses a cup on top of the gun Conversion use the cup on the bottom Their are air difference 20lb with hvlp and 60lb up to 90lb the conversion gun may have more over spray due to the more air I guess it is your choice I perfer the hvlp Less air and less over spray More finish get on the item being spraid Now the conversion will do the same It will get the Job done I guess their is no real answare which is best You pick and it will work I have both and i use the hvlp all the time

Thanks Fred, I understand the principles I just wanted some comparison of is one better than the other and why. Air supply is not a problem, it just cost me $2800 to fix that. It seems to me that it may not be worth buying an expensive HVLP kit if the conversion gun comes close to its performance but if it is no where near the HVLP then it may be worth the investment. So, simply put how do they compare?

Chris, having never used the dedicated HVLP kit I can't give you a comparison.

I don't know what you are trying to spray and on to what, but I have sprayed all sorts of finishes, enamel, lacquer and water based (in gfact spryed the whole outside of my shed with water based finish with this gun) and I wouldn't swap it for anything else.

Spray gun types have always been a mystery to me and HVLP seems to be the go except it has one drawback, damned expensive as a turbine kit. I haven't got to the spraying stage yet and it will spray everything from paint to lacquer I guess.
