i remember reading one time that it was wrongly attributed to dickens but can't remember who (if indeed the article said) it was ... i would guess gbs who said many clever things

We did this in school, the teacher had an extremely difficult time ensuring we pronounced the word as "ass" instead of how we thought it should be pronounced, "arrrse".
Being a school border come dinner time, all you could hear around our class table were many variations of rolling ones r
I'm going with Dickens in Oliver Twist.
