Default Minwax Wipe On Poly - hybrid

    Hi all,

I am wondering if anyone in the know would be able to answer this question. Could you mix Minwax Wipe On Poly - Satin, with Minwax Wipe On Poly - Gloss, 50/50 and get a semigloss finish.

    Thanks in advance,

    Darren

    Default Minwax Mixing

    Hi all,

For anyone who uses this product I contacted Minwax in USA and they said that yes you can mix Wipe On Poly Satin with Wipe On Poly Gloss to achieve and semi gloss sheen. They just said to mix and then try on a spare piece until the sheen that you require is met. I have done this on a table top by mixing these at 50/50 and it has come up with a beautiful semi gloss sheen and silky smooth to the touch.

A question for regular users of this product. After the first coat had set I rubbed this down with 400 grit, then 600 after the second, 800 after the third and 1200 on the subsequent coats. Can I get to a point were on the last coat I dont have to sand the previous coat or do all the coats have to be sanded for the next coat to bond.

    Thanks in advance

    Darren

    Darren.

I would be cautious with sanding to very fine grits between coats with WOP.

I have used Minwax WOP gloss & satin on woodturnings for several years & have learned how to use it and to avoid some of its pitfalls. I had a nasty experience with an AWTEX competition piece that I had spent too many hours on a Minwax WOP Gloss finish doing what you have done. I reverse chucked it and used "low tack" masking tape for additional security. All was great untill I removed the masking tap and many layers of finish but in varying layer thicknesses. It was recovered but not to my satisfaction and almost did not go into AWTEX. The piece got a "Best Novice" third in 2009, but the thought still lingers what if!
