    Default Nature Made ME Buy IT

    G'Day everyone,

    I went to a HomeDepot to buy a few items and some wood(timbers) and spotted a piece of pine 2"x10"x 8 ft with a knotted portion that caught my eye and my nature, figuring a nice sculptured band saw box.. It is rather unique (I think) so it came home with me. My situation is that I need to preserve the large Knot and am not sure how to do so. I call it BigBird.

    I have cut the block, outline, drawers etc. Now it's ready for sealing and sanding. I want to keep the roughness around the 'Nest' so it adds to the life of the of this project. The knot goes right thru the front drawer cover and a portion of the cavity base.

    Looking at the picture of the knot I don't think you have a problem. It's what I've always known as a live knot, that is one that was growing when cut. Because of that it should not separate from the surrounding timber.

    Unlike the small knot at 4 o'clock with the black line around it in the first pic which is a dead knot and could come loose. But I see you've cut it away from the box top in the second pic.

    The problems you may face are slight rippling of the timber where it dries differently to the other grain and possibly radial cracking but if it's now properly seasoned and sealed that danger should have passed.

    Post a pic of the finished item, I think it will look quite extraordinary,

    What I'm trying to find out is how and what to use - to seal this knot and the surrounding area.
