Thanks Ian for the pointers.
I have an idea that gets around some of the issues you have raised, but this in itself raises more issues. There is more to come in this regard, Yes, for my first plane build ( actually it is the second as I did make a wooden shoulder plane a while back) I have gone in at the deep end.
I have taken on board many of the issues you have raised. The positioning of the handle being one of some concern.

Matt
I am keeping "The Brute" on a short tether. (Actually, I did think perhaps "The Monster" after Frankenstein's creation or the naked motorcycle made by Ducati). However, either way, I think you should take all sensible precautions to protect "The Body" from unwanted attention.
I think the slight irregularity you see at the front of the plane is where I was cutting the steel and when I round off the front that should go. I will check this. Don't go wasting your money on optometrists just yet. As I said, the camera often seems to highlight faults that were never obvious to the naked eye. Thank you for mentioning this in front of the judges' tender eyes, who incidentally I think are wonderful, beautiful people of the utmost integrity and very unlikely to be swayed by cheap shots at material failings.

Maybe Matt should see about his eyesight - considering the state of the Body,...
But here is an opportunity for you to add some really impressive complexity to the Brute - now that Ian has pointed out how easy it is to make a simple BULA (and possibly minus 50%; doesn't leave you much hope of a decent score at all) - you can add a skew angle to compensate for that slope Matt has detected/invented and cleverly account for any lax tolerances (due to run-of-the-mill channel steel that is). You know, give the Brute a sophisticated slant.

I think Matt may have been studying "The Body" a little too closely and that is what is affecting his eyesight. Let's hope he finishes it before he goes completely blind.
I don't know about these time extensions discussed in other threads. I think I would settle for an age handicap....Half a tick, I already have that. What I mean is I need to be allowed to start at the 300m mark in a 400m race: That sort of a handicap

Not really Matt, but here are a few teaser pix:

About one minute on the fibre wheel and they's all fancied up.

The clues are there but you have to interpret them. Tomorrow I hope to get up the courage to cut the mouth. I might have to have a steadying drink tonight.
I do recall "jaws" but don't recall the lovely lady. Now that is worrying and is probably indicative of my psychological state of mind. I might have to binge on the Bond movies. Actually I am getting a flashback even as I am about to sign off. Does jaws walk off into the sunset with a tiny girl of "plane" appearance?

A very small update. I took the plunge with the mouth. I am going with a tight mouth because everybody likes a tight mouth, particularly with a bevel up blade.

There's a bit of filing to go yet .
What do you think? Will I need to open it up a little for clearance?

When looking side-on at the sole you can clearly see an undeniable connection between The Brute and Richard Kiel
