I have also acquired a loose handle fitted with a full set of medallion and split nuts that was also to be gifted. It is by far the most comfortable handle lve ever held but maybe that is because of the lack of a blade.......!

Ah ha. A Disston D8 thumbhole. A little while back I was desperately looking for one of those. I ended up making one, but it wasn't quite right and consigned to the experimental status:

Yours looks nice, possibly a little short in the top horn (mine is a little exaggerated). I could be interested.

I think it's a little early to call out the weather. But I will agree us shed type people don't consider going into the house as a first option if the weather turns bad.

My guess it has something to do with nature or evolution?

It can be cut into 4 smaller pieces if need be.
