Pagie went away with a repaired, reshaped and now hardened scorp, along with a nice knife.

A few demo mini pocket making knives made and a hook.

Few of the guys made their first hooks to take home.

Thanks to Dale for hosting a great day. Also thanks to his mentor and offsider for their assistance on the day as well.

Here is my first attempt at blacksmithing:

    20170625_181023.jpeg

It might not look as fancy as Dave's, but I started with round stock, had to transition both ends to square to taper them then transition one end back to round before bending the shape. I made up for a plain looking design by finding a nice piece of wood as a background for the photo. I think we both did well for first timers thanks to the great instruction we received.

It was a great day with friends learning the basics of new skills.

When are you running the "advanced basic" course Dale?

    Cheers

    Doug

Looks like everyone had a ball.

I was expecting all the spectators would have grabbed a hammer to beat the hell out of some steel and make some Damascus

We did that when we had a knife making GTG at my place. The crowd was a bit more "mature" and didn't think they'd stick around if I started handing out sledge hammers.

Matt, I think Dave was the only one taking sneaky stealth photos.

Dave, I ran your proposal of private lessons in trade for some home repairs past the Missus and she wants to know when can we start. Lol.

Thanks Dale for a great day, notwithstanding the cold.

Learned a lot but the main lesson I learned is that I ought to stick to wood turning and not take up blacksmithing as an additional hobby.

A week after Dale's get together I had an opportunity to have another go at forging.

I made this forged knife under the guidance of a very talented professional knife maker.

It was a great opportunity to build on the skills i learned with Dale while also breaking out in another direction.

I am very proud of that as a first attempt at forging a knife.

    Nice knife Doug.

Talk us through the process, what and how much forging on the blade, grinding, what tang, how did you fit the handle, heat treating etc.
