these are users and the timber is Rosewood

yep pin point laser beam eyes

Don't tell anyone as it's a closely guarded turners secret ... it's essentially just a groove cut in the handle and a piece of braided wire wrapped (picture wire in this case) half or more around the handle whilst spun on the lathe. Can get pretty hot and chars the wood

I'm not a turner, but the one demo I did see, the guy said he picked up the little (credit card-sized) plastic veneer colour sample 'tiles' at paint shops and used those in the groove.

I just finished tidying up a set of bergs for Lyle ! A little bit of sanding, some shallac and a new decal gets them looking respectable again.

These aren’t as cool as the birch handles, and even worse they’re Berg-Bahco, but it’s a full set and I got them at less than I was prepare to pay so I’m quite happy. The 32mm has been badly abused and will soon be about 6mm shorter, and the backs need a little work before a sharpen, and maybe I’ll get a chance to start in that over the weekend. They’ll go well with the few odds and ends I have picked up elsewhere.

Good pick there.
I reckon the red handled ones are underrated
I have a few and find them comfortable to use
May not be as aesthetically pleasing as birch handles as you say
But as is also said "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" Or chisel holder in this case.
And you got one of the really nice boxes for them

Just a question about the red handles, how well do they perform when using a steel claw hammer? Are you still restricted to wooden mallets?

I would be keen to hear your thoughts and or experiences!

Why would you wale on a Berg chisel with a 600+ gram claw hammer?

A wooden mallet is almost trivially easy to make. But if you must hit one with a steel hammer, I'd be suggesting a relatively light weight Warrington hammer with a head mass around 300 - 350 g.

I’ve picked up a couple of loose red handled Bergs, and at least one of their handles has been damaged, but obviously I have no idea what the gorilla who owned it used to get that right. I’ll try to remember to pop out to the workshop during lunch and get a pic of it.
