There are some things I should add to finish off the bench properly. A filler strip between the split tops would be beneficial. And I need to do something about bench dogs. I am using cut down 19mm dowel at the moment, which is working well enough. Since it is working well enough, it'll likely be 20 years before I do anything about it
I'll probably make another bench for my workshop before I finish the current one off completely. I still have a fair bit of the material that I used for the current bench. Given its degraded state, I can't think of anything else to use it on other than a bench. I don't want to throw the material out and it is in the way at the moment. I'll make the next bench to be lighter weight with vertical legs, primarily used to support my bench grinder, bobbin sander and scroll saw, with lots of teeny tiny apothecary type drawers below to hold screws, nails, drawer pulls and jig fittings etc. This can't be my next project, because I am currently reducing the amount of bags of sawdust in the house, and a bench like this will fill up another 12 bags!

Kuffy, the advantages of the broom handle/dowel bench dogs : They are always available, they don't damage your planes, blades of chisels and they are never "lost" by mates.
I have the veritas wonderdogs and use them in conjunction with the dowel dogs.Pat

Lol, a lot of people have suggested that I won't want to hurt it. Yesterday while taking photos, I found myself slamming tools and timber into the bench without a care in the world. The bench is worth more than my car, but that's only because I have had my car for longer than the bench. I foresee a rapid value depreciation of the bench coming quickly
Yeah, the dowels seem to be working well enough for me, and so I won't be rushing out to buy anything

From here, it was all about the most important part of a workbench...the styling. Because the bench legs are splayed out on an angle, I wanted the deadman to sort of fill in the gap between it and the legs evenly. So I have made the top narrower than the bottom, and added a sexy curve. Looks pretty good I reckon. The deadman slides back and forth easily with light pressure up the top. It works better by pushing at the bottom as expected, but it slides perfectly fine even with the racking I apply to it when pushing from the top corner.
The “styling” is the most important part? So now I know where I really Phukt up on mine then
I think, if you would be prepared to do a 2 day workshop on this “styling” thing, I would happily be the first to put down a deposit to secure a place. I’m really lacking in the style department.

There are some pretty fancy looking benches out there. Mine is pretty basic because I have no idea about style, fashion or trends. I just do stuff
This thing came across my instaspam feed earlier today. Sawyer Design Custom Furniture’s Instagram post: “I’ve got a thing for triangles ⏪⏩ • Going with the flow again for this sliding deadman. Almost out of coordinating lumber and trying to tie…”
Looks cool, but is too much effort for me.

I'll give Sawyer full marks for workmanship but its a bit over the top for my tastes in a work bench, Kuffy's would do me any day
