Thanks Trevor,
It is indeed a weird looking unit, but it is an inspiring build. I love railways and never heard of Richard Trevethick before finding this.

Hi All,
Yes Dalboy, there is a you-tube video - Blists Hill - Ironbridge which shows an operating replica of the Peny-Darren. I think the have taken some design licence in the replica and I am building trying to incorporate the old original plus the updated replica, When it is all said and done, the old original never survived the early 1800's anyway so the replicas are good "guesses" anyway.
I have done the lubrication pump - run off an eccentric cam on the gear / flywheel shaft. I turned up the piston out of aluminium. The filler cap was a plastic bottle lid I cut down. The elbow is an old PVC electric cable elbow that was lying around. It is not a working pump - it is just for looks. When I progress further - I will put a copper outlet line from the body of the to a 4 point distributor that will feed 4 copper tubes to each individual wheel bearings.
The second photo shows the clutch plate and yoke beside the drive gear.
Not sure when I am going to start doing a bit of painting. Decided to add a bit of contrast to the colour scheme by painting the square shaft chrome. The majority of the locomotive will be cast iron grey (satin - so it won't be shiny). What do others think ?
Keith.

Started work on the front end of the boiler today. Made up drawings of the front boiler cover and cowling for the main drive piston. I have roughed out the piston support bracket which also supports the piston guide shafts. The main piston will be made from 25mm solid aluminium round. The support shafts will be 12mm solid aluminium round.

Thanks to you mate. Did you get a copy of the private message ?
By the way I have been looking for some gate valves (as we discussed) for my blowdown on the Peny-Darren. Bunnings had some but way too big. Looked on Reece and McCann website but they look big as well. Do you know what size are the smallest gate valves available ? Will drop in at Munday's tomorrow.

I think you might be out of luck with small handles. It appears that the smallest made are 48mm by John Valves which suit 8mm Gate valves.
I don't know if there are other specialty valves around.

Yep, got the message thanks.

Dallas,
Thank for your efforts in looking this up for me - however, Derek has shamed me into making the blowdown valve myself (thanks Derek - I should have made that decision originally).
Been working on the front end of the boiler today - no photos today but should get some decent photos tomorrow. Today was lots of design work and measuring to make sure everything fits. The main piston protrudes just above the top of the boiler and is supported by 2 secondary shafts each side of the piston.
