Actually Cliff, my Dad was born in Julaten. He lived on a cattle station way up north for a while (this was owned at different stages by Dad's Dad's family and by Dad's Mum's family before there was that connection), lived in Herberton and Mareeba, then Cairns. Mum born in Chillagoe and grew up in Cairns. Lots of history for me up there.

Poppa, our fathers probably knew each other. My father worked at Tate tin mines in the 1930s and I still have his and his brother's RAOB lodge certificates from Julatten. Grandfather was a tin buyer in Herberton & knew John Newell. I was born in Cairns, lived in Mt. Mulligan & was able to take my daughter & her husband there last year & found the remains of our old house.
Sorry about derailing the thread.

It's possible Alex, but my Dad was born in 1940. More likely that my Grandfather knew your father. Dad's father's family owned Curraghmore cattle station many moons ago (there is a creek on the property with our family name), and when Dad was a boy it was owned by his mother's family up until the late 1940's. Might not be called that anymore.... My grandfather was a shop keeper in Julatten I think, and when they moved to Cairns he became a life assurance agent (one of the old-fashioned ones that helped people a lot), and serviced all of the country areas in the far north that he knew so well. When I was a young boy my Dad joined the same life assurance company and we used to drive to Coen once a year to the races, where Dad would catch up with customers and old mates from his youth. Amazing to look back on it now. My Dad's Mum has her picture in the Herberton museum - her netball team is pictured (I have a photo of this).
If your family has a history up there you (or your family) might also know my other grandfather - Dr Charles Knott. For many years he delivered most of the population of the area and was the only surgeon for miles around. He practiced in Cairns into his 70's and died in the 1980's, after a long and (very!) colourful life.
Anyway, sorry for the thread highjack - I'll stop now.

Well, I got some brochures in the mail today so a BIG thanks to Cliff for sending them down. It's muchly appreciated.
He also sent some a sample of some kind of woven grass so, thinking I might as well get into the swing of things and get into Nth Qld mode, ready for the trip on Sunday, I duly rolled the grass up, lit the end and sat on the back deck looking at the hills. Bloody hell, the thing lit up a bit fast and I burnt my nose.If at first you don't succeed, give something else a go. Life is far too short to waste time trying.

You were supposed to sniff them, not smoke them.
PS. If you search through the stuff carefully there is a Wren Timbers flyer stuck in there somewhere.Cliff.

Gumby,
Back in the early 1970's, there were lots of sand dunes and not many people at Port Douglas; so it was an ideal place to take your girl friend or newly-wed wife for open-air fun and games. Unfortunately, Tony Scase changed all that, but I am sure you will still have a fun time there.

Tropical cyclones are fun.
Just like the tsunami we had a few weeks ago.
I reckon I'm the only person that ever saw that tsunami.
At the time they said it would hit us (if it did), I went to the beach (across the road) and for an hour watched every single wave that came in.
Surely one of them must have been the tsunami
