Stu,
I'm reading from a copy of the Douglas brochure... ram strokes per minute, 42, 62 and 88. Table feed , 5 thou to 30 thou per stroke.
You can see the corrugations on this fixed table - Deckel Fixed Angular Table For Deckel FP3 - CLEAN | eBay

That should fix it Bob, good job.
Ewan,
Just keep your old sump oil as I think used works best. I dip anything I can as it helps with stopping rust in my shop, this nut was oil dipped.

Hi Ewan,
Heat it to red hot, plunge into the oil, and hold it under until it cools, if you pull it out too quick it catches fire... (no crude jokes please)
As BT said it will come out jet black and a fair proportion is just carbon on the surface which wipes off, but the part underneath will be a uniform colour.
When you have something you don't want to heat I've used a cold black called "Black Magic" I think you can get it through gunsmith suppliers.
I've never been successful blackening stainless... not that I really want to..
If it's a part that you want to case harden, then I've got good results with "Cherry Red" Its a good solution for situations where you've machined something from mild steel, but want it hardened..
Regards

Hi BT,
Thats a little faster than I was expecting, my shaper will go down to 11spm(or less using the VSD) and a 1/4" crossfeed would be half a turn. Any guesses on how deep the cut would be? I might try a few this afternoon.
Stuart
p.s. I should add, I think I'll have time to do the crossfeed after the tool has left the work. Otherwise I think a tool lifter would be needed...... but who knows?Last edited by Stustoys; 30th April 2012 at 11:25 AM. Reason: p.s.

Thanks Ray Dave and Bob,
I think when using a torch i just havnt got the steel hot enough. I know all about oil catching fire.....quenching for hardening in oil is pretty standard, as it cools more slowly than water and doesnt rust everything like brine.....it does catch fire easy though.
Ray, have you purchased the cherry red here in aus or only from overseas?

Well I had a quick play today with some nasty MS I had laying around. I just used a finishing tool I already had. Something isnt right with the tool as it lifts a little as it starts the cut but I didnt have the time to sort it out. The grooves are about 0.007" deep with a 0.3" crossfeed. If I get the chance I'll have a go on some cast tomorrow.

I'd like to find a table that lists pitches and depths . Cant have everything I guess.
Had a bit more of a play today. The tool still needs more work as the cut gets shallower as its crossfeed for some reason. Not sure I'd be game to do it to my mill, but it might come in handy one day.

Sorry Ewan,
I missed your question, I was distracted by the 80% not there grooves.... that looks good Stuart, you could do a cross hatch and have 95% not there....
I bought it direct from RoseMill and had it shipped via shipito..

I got some of their anti-scaling compound as well.
