16th September 2011, 07:47 PM #46Nice lathe Dano, Makes me cry just looking at it. Then I go out and look at my Chinese thing and I cry some more
Thanks Simon, if I ever decide to sell it I give you first choice,
Ironwood, it's looking good, but do you get a green glow coming from your shed when you turn the lights out
.
cheers Richard.

Thanks Richard, Yeah you almost need sunglasses to look at it. My old mate who gave me the paint has a bit of a chuckle now and again.
Its really not too bad though, I am getting used to it.
The photos were taken with the flash on, so it looks even brighter than it really is.

Now, Now, lets not make fun of a perfectly good lathe
, when I started painting my Atlas lathe I started with a similar colour, but it was cheap paint and it was rubbing off just with the smell of WD40
, thank god for that
.
the photo is of the spindle cover.
cheers, Richard.

Unfortunately, my paint will take a bit more than WD40 to get off.
The funny thing is, I was going to paint in in a very sedate light grey, but was persuaded to go the green by comments on here about green being the standard colour for Forbes lathes.
Not sure if the standard green was this bright though.

This was the original colour of mine, if you can see past the dirt
, as supplied by Forbes back then,
Cheers, Richard.

I think mine is now a bit more of a vibrant green than that

That's shaping up real nice Ironwood, well done! I've got my eye out for one of those lathes to replace my Chinese 9x20.

Hi Ironwood,
Great project, it's looking very smart, congratulations on a fine job.
Just a couple of questions, about the belting, and lubrication, apologies if it's been answered before, but have you noticed any reduction in vibration with the new belt?
Second question, (probably a dumb question) with the above set up, how are the gears lubricated, doesn't the oil get splashed out the side by the movement of the belt, or is there some other way of lubricating the gears?
Regards
Ray

Thanks Ray.
I cant comment on how the belt performs yet, as I havent spun the lathe up yet.
I have been running the motor without the belt, while I get the vsd sorted out.
Still have to adjust the spindle preload as well, and sort out the leaking seals on the sightglasses.
As for the gear lube, I think they just get a bit of oil manually squirted on, as far as I know there is no oil sitting in the bottom to get splashed about.

Hi Ironwood,
Thanks for the clarification, I guess you could always put a splash guard somewhere near the belt exit if it became a problem.

I will let you know how the belt goes, once I get to use the lathe for a while.
Things dont happen too quickly in my shed, as most of my time is spent running my shop.
