I did ask that guy about them, they are made in China (Brand X). I may be able to sub the wider and cheaper 5205's but I'll have to check later on.

Wow I didn't think this thread was that old, LOL
I agree you cant believe everything on the internet.
With the SKF story it is real as it was SKF bearing centre that had the pamphlets on the counter and told me to look out for them on ebay etc.
He did tell me of some stories where the company found X amount of them and they where destroyed, but I forget what and where it was now.
The guy that told me about it has worked there for 20+ years, so was not just having me on. He was also the one that gave me a huge discount on my bearings on every visit that worked out cheaper than anywhere else (even ebay), so it was not like he was having me on just so I would buy expensive bearings.
He did also tell me SKF are now making bearings in China as well as Germany, etc, etc, but under SKF quality control. Who knows, in years to come we might see the other countries drop off producing them and it will only be China manufacturing them.

This link contains more background: SKFFAGINABS
I smell a rat. What I want to know is, who is "Steve McGuire" and who is paying him? There is nothing in his blog that explains his motivations.

Steve M seems to be referring us to blog articles written by himself rather than engaging in discussion here, anyone can write a blog and refer people to it to back up their arguments. As far as my bearings are concerned I still have them, FBJ is made in China, has "Japan" printed on the box and has about 2/3rds the balls in the bearing as the original bearing.....definitely suss.

Steve M has an inflated sense of his investigatory skills, to say nothing of his faulty logic. Plus, what's the goal to his blogs apart from trying to rehabilitate the reputation of Chinese counterfeiters?

He sure seems motivated if he has found our humble forum. I spent quite a few hours running some of his stuff down. That link Bryan put up. Evan was on about it at HSM. I forget the details, but I think a lot of it has some merit. I could never find a prosecution in regard to the faked bearings in Germany. Lots of press releases, but no charges / litigation / news reports. That seemed very un-German to me.
Phil.

Hello Bryan
I am one of four brothers that own McGuire Bearing Company headquartered in Portland, Oregon USA. We have been in business since my father started the company in 1954. Prior to World War II my father was a salesman for SKF. I have been in the bearing industry for most of my life (since high school). I am 62 years old. My motivation for writing about these stories is simply to see that the truth be told. I started investigating the Schweinfurt story after examining the Schaeffler Group flyer. I was suspicious because the pictures did not look like what a counterfeiter would produce. I belong to a group called bearingnet.net of bearing suppliers from all over the world. I was able to get information on the story from other members.
My company was one of fourteen respondents in a Complaint filed by SKF USA at the United States International Trade Commission. This complaint concerned “gray market” not counterfeit bearings. In fact, at that time SKF could not find one example of a counterfeit SKF bearing in the US.
You can read about it here:

Steve, thanks for supplying the extra info. I haven't read the whole article yet, but already you're sounding a lot more credible.

Steve, after reading your link I can see where you're coming from now, it explains a lot. It reminds me of the time in the 90's that the US government began selling helicopter spares from military surplus and the helicopter manufacturers that made the actual parts in question were claiming the parts were no good for equivalent civilian helicopters. They were nearly taken to court by the government.
