For what it's worth.... Artisans Retreat will be a non smoking property.
Smokers will be allowed of course - I have no problem with them - they just won't be able to indulge while on the property.
If this action limits the number of patrons we get - so be it... what we lose on one hand I think we will gain on the other.

Has this now become the "we do" "we don't" advertising thread? As gratuitous a post as I've seen in a while.

Defence policy is no smoking within 10 metres of any opening to a building. Opening is defined as door, vent or window which is not sealed shut (closed is not sealed). Usually the Defence force policy echos some sort of civillian standard so it might be worth looking into. Then we get the idiots who lean against a pole with a bl00dy great no smoking sign on it and light up outside the gym.

Isin't that strange, the Defence policy used to be to add cigaretes to ration packs when they sent men to war (or just on exercise for that matter). It's the Army that got me smoking but now are not prepared to help me stop, the adiction of smoking is as bad as any other drug, but there are many organisations to help drug adicts get and stay clean, not so with smokers even though many of us would love to give up.

I feel sorry for Non-Smokers but when you have smoked for over 30 years as I have and have tried to give up as many times as I have, that smell that's so offensive to you just makes me crave another smoke, and then it's back to square one yet again.

The amount of money that I have given the government in 30 years for something that they started me doing warrants some long term help I recon, and don't say theres Quit Line because that org is a joke.

Personaly I think the guy that wants to stop smelling cigarette smoke has got a genuine Right, but in my day it was "if you can't beat em - join em"

Thread seems to have gone off track from detectors to pro and anti cigarette smoking.
It's an argument that's gone on for years and will continue to do so.

I have an old fifties record called Cigrettes an Whiskey and Wild Wild Women. I quote one verse

Cigretts is the curse of the whole human race,
A man is a monkey with one in his face.
Here's my definition, believe me dear brother.
A fire on one hand, a fool on the other.

Seems people were polarised even then.

To get back on track to the detectors themselves, in my experience at sea any of the battery ones will work in a confined area ie toilet.

To give you an idea when we do weekly rounds on older ships that have the battery models the we always find them with the battery disconnected in the cabins of smokers. We replace the battery as a matter of safety and sure enough the alarm will sound sometime in the next 24 hours.

Disconecting smoke detectors batteries now sam when they were hard wired it use to be a plastic bag and cable tie or rubber band use to find them like that, even on a tanker , some never learn that the ashes they leave may be their own.
