Thanks Lance and Colin. For a brief moment I thought this thread might be totally bereft of sympathy.
While others have been concentrating on the fundamentals of plane design I have taken a different approach and placed great store in the trivial aspects. On the positive side I have actually achieved something. This first pic is a concession to those who are preoccupied with peening as to hold the threaded portion to the top of the cap screw I pinned through with a nail. This is almost the limit of peening activity I am contemplating. Even in the flesh the contrast is hard to pic, although I had thought it would stick out like those proverbial attachments commonly found on male dogs, but no:

One comment I would make on the peening is that I drilled out a countersink. I can see that reaming the countersink with a purpose made awl such as IanW has advocated will give a superior shape that will appear more regular when filled. If you wish to countersink with a drill, it must be done before the hole is drilled.
More views. Hairy Oak or Bulloak on the left and Forest Red Gum on the right:

Yes, they are on the large size as if they on steroids and it remains to be seen whether they will be totally out of proportion with the planes. I really wanted to see how they would come up colour wise. Unfortunately the varnish was going off and despite diluting it with mineral turps it was still quite thick and sticky. No matter as it will have to be rubbed back many times.

So there is now some degree of commitment to the timber types. Gone are all thoughts of Gidgee: Not because I don't like it, because I do, but it had little in the way of feature to it. So it will be the allocasuarina Bull oak/Hairy Oak for the metal plane and Spotted Gum with a Forest Red Gum sole/handle/front knob for the timber plane. There we are, unequivocal, for those who like such things. I don't want to mention any names ( but I hope the snow in Ballarat has melted and the ambient temperature is much improved for that nameless person).

They look very nice Paul, a credit too you, if they don’t suit the planes,I can see a side line in draw pulls definitely.
How did you form the flutes?
PS I heard it was snowing in Ballarat through my contacts, an the news channel, and on Facebook,
But we’re still enjoying virus town in Melbourne.
Cheers Matt.

Thanks Matt
Temperature up here is 10° cooler today and windy as all hell!
On the subject of puns, if the situation doesn't get any better fairly soon, we might have to have an international inquisition to see who started this pundemic off. So we can create a scapegoat. Oh....I hope it wasn't me
The flutes were first cut with a hacksaw blade and then "developed" with two different sizes of chainsaw file.
