I suppose the definition depends on what source you use. This is Webster's (been around since 1838) definition;Definition of boulder

• : a detached and rounded or much-worn mass of rock

This is the sort of definition I was thinking should apply.
Not Bob's "erratic" splintered rock in a paddock.
