Did you use straight iron acetate on the merbau?
I've read you can get a darker finish by pre-washing in tea to increase the tannin content of the wood which then reacts with the iron acetate.

Hi Nick. As an example; if the top of the wedge was left the sharp corners these could experience later damage or possible splitting every time the wedge is tapped down into position. The lower section of the wedge has the center portion cut away to prevent an obstruction to the wood shavings occurring as they enter through the mouth opening and into the throat of the plane.
