Now you have made a decision that is your own and you will be happy with it. Bad luck the challenge didnt come off but you saw the faults before you started.
I'd say a great result. Hopefully the new bloke can bring some work with him and reward your boss for sticking with you.regards

It sounds like the outfit is a sham and I'd be skeptical of validity of their offer. Oh well, it seems like you have found out in time.
