    Default go the bolt cutters

bolt cutters where an excellent choice for the job - what else could you cut it with without causing it to vibrate like all get-out?

avoiding chipping is handy but he could have had his eyes covered

I was thinking something more like a bone saw would have been more appropriate.

Bolt cutters, if you ever use them, you will notice they tend to twist the material they are cutting. Also its hard to exert enough pressure to cut the material without applying pressure in some direction, up down sideway etc. Normally this is not a problem, normally however the material isn't embedded in someones face/head.

It turned out to be of little consequence. The material was not embedded far enough nor in a place for any twisting to cause serious damage. If they had already X-rayed him they might have known this and might well have been why they chose to use the cutters. However had it been embedded in his skull or brain where any twisting or shifting could cause severe permanent damage, using the cutters could have been a major mistake. They seemed to work well enough in this case though. So to the chaps.
    Wood. Such a wonderful substance.
