Have a good trip John - give us a call when you are South of the border and still have mobile coverage.

    Thanks all,
So its going to be the freeway to the airport and find that M5, if they both accept cash.

Whilst we are on the subject of ETAGS, they are a swine for visitors aren't they?
Firstly if you own the car and travelling south from Qld. and only intend to use once (perhaps the M7 etc.) you have got to get the etag, no cash accepted.

Secondly, if in my instance, a hire car, I assume the etag equipment would be sent to the car hire firm (my case Melbourne) and if I am touring, how the heck do I get the etag eventually, I am not staying anywhere permamently if touring.

In the case of Melbourne, no Etag is required, at least for visitors.

Use the CityLink today and you have 3 days to ring up for a day-pass, or you can do it on-line within the 3 day period. Quite painless, although I am against toll roads, but that is another story

Oh, BTW there is a limit of 12 day passes in a year, after that you need to get an ETag.

Years ago I jumped a turnstile on the Paris Metro after a long free trip and got nabbed by a guard.
She said (french accent here) I am sorry I must give you a fine. I said look at where we are - it was Charles De Gaulle Airport - you can give me a fine but I am flying out of here in one hour.

She said Merde, and something else I didn't understand and waved me on.

I assume that would be the same with any fine you got from private toll operater issued to a hire car company, half the time locals don't get issued with the fines.

Depends on the hire car company as to whether they pass the fine on, I imagine most would.
    Hertz certainly do this.

Transurban/CityLink don't issue fines, that would be considered too common

They issue an invoice with the original day-pass charge, with an equivalent "administration charge" to the same value, ie you pay double.
    But absolutely no "fine"
