Thread: Triton TRA001 Router.

You can fit a tra001 to the unilift you just have to use one of those extended collets so you can change bits from above the table. This way doesnt engage the shaft lock as the extended collet uses an allen key
I was considering doing this but unilifts arent available anymore.. the jessem replacements seem to be a pain to fit the tra001 . If you own a unilift you can use a TRA

Oh thats a shame but good to know at the same time.
When I inquired about the unilift from pws they said the new jessem lift kit is the new replacement but they dont recommend the triton. They recommend the RP2301FC from Makita which apparently doesnt have above table bit chanfe you have to get the collet extension. The jessem kit was roughly 500. Makita routers roughly 500 along with 100 for the collet extension.
Pretty expensive alternative id say

The voice of dissent
Stewie, if your are used to the mechanism of the Unilift I think you'll be very disappointed with the Triton raising system. It's very coarse, and has a lovely tendency to "jump" (probably when it's sitting between notches, like a quick release vise). The fine control is ok, but feeding the rod down through the table results in a mishit (my what?) at least one in two tries (unless you can see where it's connecting).
So, it's a good router with some quirks, and some improvements need to be made. Presuming it fits the Unilift then I would advocate staying with that system.
When you talk about what the threads are, do you mean the threads in the Triton base? I think you must because you already have the Unilift. Mine is held into the (homemade) table by two M6 bolts that screw into the base.

Hi Brett. Yes I was talking about the Triton threads on the base plate. I would very much prefer to keep the Unilift in service with the Triton router. Its finely tuned adjustments are excellent and difficult to replicate by other means. The feedback so far suggests that the Unilift will prevent the TRA001 Router from raising high enough to engage its inbuilt spindle lock. I am unsure at this stage if that issue can be resolved. Question for you Brett. With your Unlift/Triton set up can you achieve any above table height projection with the spindle collet when installing router bits.

Surely this can be resolved. I saw that Stu from Stus shed has a tra mounted in a unilift at somestage and in another magazine for reviewing purposes so they have gotten it to work. Im just not sure what they did to over come the issue

I don't have a Unilift. The router is bolted to an MDF top, and I routed out a circle for it so that it was thin enough to still allow the above table thingy to happen. Where the base sits in the top the MDF is.......standby........crikey it's brisk out there......12mm thick. I can't imagine the Unilift plate being thicker than that.
