Thread: Tyres

Here goes the thread diversion:
The last car "owned" by my wife was speed limited to 250k. Now all the time we owned it, we never hit the limiter....
The standard tyres were worth something like $700 each at the time, and were very soft rubber and lasted about half a block.
All the stories about requiring Super dooper high speed tyres or your insurance will be voided are WRONG! I wrote to the insurer, asked them why I needed tyres capable of sustained 200kph driving when at best the speed limits are 110, and was given written assurance that I could use any lesser rating PROVIDED I didn't have an accident as a result of driving the car beyond the rating of the tyre.
Interestingly enough, there is little doubt that if one had an accident that involved those super speeds, one would not have to worry about a claim in the first place, but the insurer would not pay up anyway!
Cheers,
P (Who can't remember if they are V,S or H rated, but runs the lowest of them now too).

I love it when the SWMBO blows off the V8's, the look on their faces .
It quite a rare car as there are only 145 of them made for the aussie market... made in a German Ford ST factory.
Seen the new RS Focus yet, what a beast has a 2.5ltr 5cyl 220bhp turbo volvo motor!....................................................................

Harry, you made me grin my nut off, SWMBO just got rid of her tank Henry (EB) at chrissy for a purple/blue mild modded liata. Now the old bug has bitten me again thinking t-28 intercooler and aftermarket chip etc.
Last time I went down this path, we ended up with a legal (first In NSW, mid eighties)full chassised 400+bhp 12A split turbo injected corolla P/Van that cost us over 45K in parts and was capable of out cornering an RGV and I won't even mention 440 times
LUV that Focus the grin factor must be brilliantBruce C.
catchy catchphrase needed here, apply in writing to the above .

Christ 400bhp in a corolla, yikes!
Yeah the grin factor is pretty good for a standard car, not as fast as the latest gen V8's in a straight line... gives the older ones hell tho!
I actualy sold my V8 and brought the ST, went from a Falcon BA 5.4 V8 auto ute in acid rush gold to a focus 2lt 4cyl C/R 6speed 2dr hatch in imperial blue... one extreme to the other!
Dam lost $20 in 8 months on the ute... lost $12k on the trade in and plus all the mods that I did to it, large chrome alloys, sports roll bar, dumped to the weeds suspension with air bags in the rear so it still could carry a load, full dual SS zorst etc etc. See if I can dig up a pic of the old girl..

Un-hi-jack time thanks folks.....
Rocker Fella, you get what you pay for in tyre talk.
GENERALLY, the more expensive - the stickier, the better grip, better wet weather handling etc etc.....UNFORTUNATELY, more grip does equal greater wear, so the best hoops (trade talk for tyres) need to be replaced pretty often. It all depends on what sort of driving you do.
Personally, I prefer do go for grip and handling (read SAFETY) over longevity and value for money, but that is just my silly notions of wishing to protect my beloved and baby!
If you have this strange idea about wanting to get a "really cheap set of tyres" go-ahead, but please please please let me know when you come to Perth so I can keep off the roads. $80-$100 for a Camry/Falcon/Commodore are frankly dangerous in all but dry and clean conditions.... but they last REALLY WELL.
Having said that, you can go really silly in the prices paid for them as well, so there must be a compromise.
My recommendation is a Dunlop Product called FM-901. V rated and fairly sticky. It will wear if you give it some stick, but your profile seems to indicate a more sedate driving style is the go, especially driving a Camry! 50-60K should be a good range with them, and they stick like shyte to a blanket in the wet!
Putting it into perspective though, try getting a "cheap" tyre for a motorbike. 1 rear for my CBR1000 comes in about $350 and lasts mayber 15,000 K's.
Bugger!Ummmm, what was the question?

Lets face facts. Were not talking about driving V8 supercars here. I have a little bit of experience in hard driving and REALLY, if you drive appropriate to conditions, you won't have trouble, no matter what rubber you're on. My back tyres are over 100,000 k's and I've never had trouble with them in the wet. AND, for their size they were one of the cheaper tyres.
The rubber you choose for a motorbike is very important. For a car, it's not really an issue for average road and driving conditions. Is there anything easier done than said?- Stacky. The bottom pub, Cobram.

Mate I think you should be looking at paying between $300 and $400 for a set of five including fittig, wheel alignment and balance.
My two cents
Cheers
