Yes Ive done that sort of thing on furniture. Where I had to take the time and be careful removing later colour jobs and leaving the original faded polish job below. Its a slower process than I want here though . I think it would take a fair bit more time. It'd be interesting to try something like that out and see how well it works though.

A guy called Tom Keating used to lecture at our school and told us to use nothing more than a Q-tip to remove varnish and dirt!, it was a painstaking process wiping on solvent and then neutralizing it.
If you're interested here's a video of his he did back in the early 80's on restoration. I was shocked when I found out many years later he was had up for multiple counts of forgery!.

I much prefer to see a machine in original paint nowadays, my first pk was in great shape paint wise but at the time I wanted it to look brand new so painted it.
I had a machine that had been painted by a dealer the usual green, they very rarely went to the trouble of degreasing or priming so the green came off with compressed air.
Really early machines were painted black.
