    Well Done!
I have not done a hand made dovetail yet but I have it on my to do list this year. I think if I can make a jewelery box for my daughter with handmade dovetails (no matter how bad) I will be very pleased.

Great effort RR, I remember my efforts in doing dovetails in highschool and they werent the best. I may have to have a go at doing some again soon.

Do you hear the voices now that you have gone to the dark side?

    Hey Wendy,

Hand cut dovetails in THIN Southern Silky Oak would have to be one of the hardest things to achieve in woodwork!
Your example is an inspiration to us all!

Well done Wendy - nice start in a tough timber to get right. One day, not to far away, you'll do a box and suddenly they'll all be good. Then you get that nice warm feeling.

that's one of the most honestly Australian boxes I've ever seen. Good on ya, no worry so much about maintaining traditions, there's plenty who will, go for the spirit of things. Can we make a box that contains the essential Australian sprit? What would it be made of? What would it look like?

It would look exactly like Wendy's box.

Well done, Wendy. Goodonya! Greenie on its way.

Incidentally, I received in the post today a copy of the Taunton DVD: Dovetail a Drawer by Frank Klausz. If you haven't seen it, it's a ripper. The bloke handcuts a fully dovetailed drawer without using any jigs or saw guides. Inspirational stuff. I haven't tried his method yet but I'm going to give it a go.

    Hi Everyone,

I've been re-reading the posts all day - had to print them out.

Thank you all for your support, great tips, PMs and Greenies. As a result, I've been in need of a tissue or two

If silky oak is difficult, then I can't wait to try camphor laurel. Maybe my nephew will be getting his treasure chest sooner than later.

Why is the silky oak difficult? I thought it was my lack of technique with both chisels and dovetails that made it hard:confused:

I must confess I'm not keen on using MDF, though it is a good product to destroy and learn with as Zen and Red said.

I think now would be a good time to build myself a shooting board and get that 4 1/2 plane refurbished (especially now that I've some Camelia oil).

I'll keep an eye out for that Taunton DVD - thanks Driver.

Voices? Yes, I do hear the voices and they are all saying "Take More Little Steps" or was that "More Shed Time for RufflyRustic"

Cheers and Many Many Thanks for your support.
