I'm going to put Sound of Silence by Disturbed out there as better than the Simon and Garfunkel version...

How can anyone hear 'Workingman Blues, 'Nettie Moore, 'Easy Chair' et.al. and not like Bob Dylan?
Although, I must admit Hendricks does a better job of 'All Along the Watchtower'

Fields of Gold by Eva Cassidy. Even Sting said her cover was better.
+1 for Sounds of Silence by Disturbed.

Maybe not better
I've always been fascinated that Alice Cooper covered Sun-Arise early in his career!

Born to be Wild, original by Steppenwolf ? ...... better version by Slade, on the red Slade Alive album I think..
Summertime, traditional, best version by Janis Joplin
Hesitation Blues, traditonal, best version Jefferson Airplane mainly due to Jorma Kaukonen on acoustic guitar, another very similar version after Jorma K. and Jack Casady performed as Hot Tuna.

I'm a fan of Disturbed and hadn't heard that cover before. Very good. (I like them because singer dude can obviously sing rather than just scream)
+1 for Johnny Cash doing Hurt.
And a big fat +1 for any of 2Cello's covers. Love them all.
How about:
Radiohead's "Creep" by Vintage Postmodern Jukebox
Micheal Jackson's "Smooth Criminal" by Alien Ant Farm
Cream's "Sunshine of your Love" by Santana w/Rob Thomas
Adele's "Hello" by Leo Marocchioli (Frog Leap Studios) - Check out all of this guy's metal covers. While repetitive in style, some are truly awesome, and he's a really nice bloke to boot. (emailed him a story about my 6yr daughter loving his cover of Let It Go and how it made me a big sooky mess)
I love me a good mashup too, but that's for another dayEvery time you make a typo, the errorists win.

Re Small Faces and that other dude:Totally with you Neil. Tin Soldier is one of my all time favourite songs. Tim Rogers et al just don't capture the vibrance of it, especially the critical rhythm change at 2.35 (in both versions curiously). In fact it's hardly even there in the Rogers version.
You may be right about that - and it's not often that you and I disagree on music topics Sorry maaaaate, but no need to mess with Tin Soldier. Steve Marriot had one of the very best rock voices ever, and Ian McLagen's organ always did it for me.......yeah yeah, you know what I mean.
For a cover to work it either has to be significantly different to the original (yet still very good), or the original was a good song done poorly and the cover brings out the true potential.
When you play the youtube of TS (original) there are suggestions come up at the end, and in the top right corner is a doco on the Small Faces. It is no doubt the same one that I saw a few years ago, which was thoroughly excellent. Robert Plant used to hand around back stage at their concerts (as yet undiscovered or yet to make it with Zepp). During the end credits, there is some Marriot singing very very similar lyrics to Whole Lotta Love, and you'd swear it was Plant....'cept Marriot was well and truly first.....
If you have time that doco is well and truly worth it for a Small Faces fan.
On a slightly different note, I never did mind the SF morphing into The Faces with Rod Stewart. "A Nod is as Good as a Wink" was a seminal album for me at the ripe age of 15. Not a lot to dislike about getting Ron Wood in the band.

It's quite okay to disagree mate, I too think Tin soldier is an all time classic. I just feel that Tim and Talei, nailed it. Tim has an uncanny knack for getting in to the character of the person whose song he is singing. Although he doesn't have Marriots voice I thought he had the moves and feel of the original, and Talei would give PP Arnold a run for her money. Just one persons opinion .
BTW, I have seen both the Steve Marriot doco's and the Small Faces doco. It is a real shame that most of the artists of that time were very badly treated by the music industry, and had very little to show for all their efforts and success. To grow old is inevitable.... To grow up is optional
