    Default F 111

    Shedhand,

I heard tonight from an ex F 111 pilot that one of them did a fuel burn under the Storey Bridge in Brisbane. He has a photo. Interested? I guess I could scan it. The photo was suppressed for quite a while.

UNDER???? the storey bridge? FM. No wonder it was suppressed. Must've had the local vagrants cr@pping their crusty undies..... Yep. I'd like to see that!
    Cheers

How are you blokes going to get your kicks if we buy a stealth fighter? We'll have to tell you when and where an aircraft will be, to the second, then you'll all run around looking for it - I suppose that could be fun ...Spot the fighter!

Maybe you'll just see a flame flying through the air and think it's Big Bird after a curry night. It just won't be the same .

The best that I ever saw was at the 2002 Australian F1 Grand Prix. I was looking at the Ferrari Marquis (with my ear plugs in) and wondered why everyone was looking up . I looked up and an FA18 was about 700 feet up just sort of hovering. Ar5e down and nose upat about 30 deg angle. Weirdest and most amazing thing I've ever see a non-VTOL aircraft perform. It was better than the car race. (I saw more of it anyway )

Top shot that. I was looking up as I drove past on the way to Tulla but didn't see it.

They did that again this year.
I found the "vertical departure" more interesting.
Once the pilot had finished showing off he just went straight up to 30,000 feet and disappeared.

I was sitting about 20 metres back and right in line with the start finish line.
It is to close to call which was louder.
An FA-18 or 22 V8's at full noise, I know the F1's sounded better

    Cheers, Jack

I would love to see the photo
I abseiled off the Story Bridge into the river a couple of years ago.
I think it is around 50 metres from the bottom of the bridge to the water so I guess you could quite easily fit a jet under there.
The problem would be the approach and departure.
Also, with the afterburner on for the "dump and run" a few windows may have shattered

    Cheers, Jack

There is no way that photo is the RAAF dumping and burning an F111 as if it is an old Torana or something!

The one that sticks in my memory was the Mirage IIIC flying rings around the FA18 at the AGP when it was in it's true home in Adelaide. Mirage was a big engine on a small airframe could do all sorts but doesn't carry the ordnance of the FA18.

Watching the FA18's land and take off from about 50m away is really cool. Then it's 'Oh ok. here goes another one'. Then its 'bloody hell haven't they got anything better to do.' Then finally it's ?????. I'm sick of this. I'm out of here.'
I've been doing a bit of work at the RAAF base lately.
First it's really awesome but you get sick of having your ear drums pulverised every few minutes. Those things are LOUD.
We were working in a small substation beside the runway and you wouldn't know a FA18 had taken off until the sound wave burst through the door and smashed you against the wall.
Still love watching them take off and land though.
Those were the droids I was looking for.

last time I saw a hornet was here about 9 months ago watching the launch out of Amberley. Then the pigs took there turn and there is something about the F111 that is just that bit more impressive. Gonna be a shame to see them go when they do.
