Odd thread sizes seem to have been an endemic thing through English industry. Some of the threads used on old Nortons and Triumphs make you wonder what drugs they were on.

Sorry for reviving this old thread. Were you able to find a replacement screw in the end or did you decide that it's not necessary to make the tool work for you. I just picked up a Stanley No. 50 today, it's also missing the "sliding section adjusting screw".

It's been my experience that some of Stanley's screws were a proprietary threading/pitch. You may struggle to replace it with off the shelf parts (meaning it may not exist outside of Stanley's former factories).
I recommend contacting Patrick Leach at his website "The Superior Works". If he can't help you he will put you in touch with someone who can.

Earlier Stanley 50's didn't have that adjustment screw as it was added around 1936. I believe by this time Stanley started using more standard threads on their planes. By looking at my 50 I would say the only use that screw would have is to make sure the body and fence remain parallel. The way the blade is held is by sandwiching the blade between the sliding section and the main body.... The screw that does this is behind the blade and would possibly draw the rear section closer together than the front.
