Some people only look at the patterns and grain in the wood. To us, they mostly all look wonderful.

Some people like to see a thick transparent finish without knowing how simple it is to get such a finish.

Some people like the shape and colour. Personal taste.

Some people like the object because of it's geographical origin. It reminds them of happy times or of somewhere they can identify with, they can take part of this wonderful place home with them.

Some people like the craftmanship like the fine joinery etc.

Some people consider if it matches their other furniture and their home.

If I was judging I would compare the item with the criterior and assess it from there taking into account grain matching, finishing, style, craftmanship etc. It is possible I would award it a prize based on the criterior.

If I was buying (not likely) a coffee table I would walk past it. It doesn't match any of our other furniture and I don't personally like that style or finish.

So to Scott's question what is it worth? If it was exactly what I was looking for and I was unaware of anything similar and cheaper then I would buy it if I could afford it.

I did one similar (see silents thread link if u havnt already) the one I made is smaller than the big one in the ebay link, I dont mind that sort of stuff. but I woulndt have a house full of it.... ones enough... they tend to sell if you keep the price down to reasonable levels - I sold one simialr to the one in my thread for $400, i think thats fair... ish...

I would say however that I wouldnt pay $5k for one...

It is not as simple as saying it is crap or not crap as you well know you stirrer.

ss_11000 suggests it is art. Apart from the selection of the timber and the choice of finish I feel the person selling it had very little input into it's shape, colour and wonderful patterns. I am questioning whether something of beauty that naturally occurs can be called art.

I am of the opinion that art is the work of an artist as a form of expression rather than the work of someone who presents an object that has natural beauty with very little input from that person.

If you believe in God and think this is art, then God was the artist and the seller is the agent who packaged it and cops the big commission.

I still wouldn't take it if you gave it to me though.

It's not to my taste and it is certainly not worth $5,000, wouldn't even take a day to make, maybe he put one to many zero's on the price. After having seen the exhibition at Bungendore and the amount of work that has gone into their items no way.
