Funny you ask that. I was pondering if I should already reveal my game plan or not. But in the spirit that we should also share our thinking here it goes.
Yes, I made some sketches several and now to scale. Including one for the scrub.
I then normally make copies so I can cut them into templates.
This one is my current design I am 95% sure it's going to work.
I want to make a closed tote and have the sole short. That makes it difficult to use the double nut design for the adjuster. Therefore I replace one nut with a spring which will be mainly concealed in the infill.
Also to have a short sole I plan to have the tote hanging over the back.
Now I have given everything I've got so far D

I had a look at some examples. The Stanley 80 and 12 for example are very short. The 112 and Lie Nielson and Veritas are about 250mm long.
My interpretation is that shorter is better in order to ride through any valley to deal with local tear out. That's why the Stanley 80 and even the 12 have the handles on the side. But not as comfy as a tote and front knob. But they need space and maybe that's why the others a longer.
Therefore I am aiming for in between. To give the wood a good finish but not to flatten it or so.
Not sure if that makes sense and I might be completely wrong or am missing something. But that's my current thinking....

Great drawings CK. Don't worry about sharing, all you have done is intimidate the competition .

This weekend my plan is to prep the metal stock. Sanding it flat and squaring off, etc.
I also want to lay out the dovetails. But I still have to do some more research on the logic behind them. Like how many? How long? What spacing? I have not found a guideline yet. Maybe I still need to look at some more to figure out how I want to do that.

Cklett,
I think the only “rule” that I came across, and Ian W put me on to it, was a decent size Tail around the mouth area.
Go to Auntie Google for help,
Infill Plane imagines.
That’s what I’ve been doing,I think most Plane makers go for what they think looks good!.
Cheers Matt.

Yes, the mouth criteria I saw and understand. In my case I am also not going to split the sole. In both cases, scrub plane and scraper plane, I do not need a fine mouth. So I think I can easily drill and file out the mouth.
But then I see that some do small.... Hang on?! While I was writing this I got distracted by a picture on google, and now it doesn't matter any more. The picture has exactly the lay out I think fits perfect for the practise scrub plane. So never mind.....

After the planning stage, I have now officially started putting the plans into action.
Working on the frog now...

Didn't get as far ad I wanted today.
I could only fit one bracket for the lever cap onto the frog. I am aiming to partly dovetail them in and further secure with a cross pin which will also hold the adjuster bolt. I will peen the metal together and sand it flat later. I think it's going to look good when done.
Still need to organise a table cloth for the foto shoots. Wasn't that also a criteria? I forgot....

Can't wait to see the process pictures. I don't have the guts to try this yet but it's on my bucket list. Many thanks for going this route.

My frog has ears now. But it's still not listening.....
I marked/stamped the joints to jot mix them up where and how they fit.
Next is drilling and filing a square hole in the middle where the adjuster assembly will connect.
