Short for "Chief Petty Officer Marine Engineer Artificer"; which was the rank I held in the Royal Navy...um....quite a few years ago now. I transferred over to the Oz navy and was annoyed to discover that although Artificers haven't been around for a couple of decades or so, the Chief Marine Technician in charge of engines is referred to as "The Tiff"; a purely honorific and undeserved title

Abratool
My Forum name was a quick decision at the time.
ABRATOOL was the name of my business for about 35 yrs or so.
The name... represents Abrasive Tools.
I specialised in Abrasive manufacture & Abrasive Tools (Hand held Air Tools of a speciality type)
Manufacture of Abrasive Belts from 1/4" wide to 12" wide by any length, overnight service.
So in essence I still think of myself as ABRATOOL.
Old habits are hard to give up.
These days its more into precision metal & woodworking, general tinkering, fiddling with machines & reading this Forum
I would describe myself as an excessive Tool & Machine Nut. Love it !!! Learnt & learning heaps from all you blokes, thanks.
A good life!
regards
Bruce

Thanks Bruce, i have always wondered about your forum name. I always thought of it as a shortened "abracadabra tool"

Dingo dog
My name comes from a dog I once had. A real good companion who saved my life twice. Picked up in Cape Your back in 1983, as the property owner was going to put him down, due to him chasing pigs and getting the female dogs preggos more then actually rounding up cattle. He was a Red Heeler with 1/8th dingo in him.

Uh-oh, look out guys here comes that boring barsteward Geoff, pretend you haven't seen him.
My name is obvious from my interest in boring tools, specifically braces and any tool with the square tapered tang that can be chucked in a brace. But also as a matter of fact braces ARE BORING! For instance, on the Hand Tools Unpowered forum if someone asks a question about a Stanley No 4 smoother (whatever the hell that is ) they will get 40 or 50 replies, on the other hand ask about a Stanley A144-12in and you'll be lucky to get 3 responses and some blank looks. I'm not complaining, no one forced me into my hobby, its all self inflicted, and I'm enjoying it.
And the "try not to be late but never be early"? I was a premixed concrete delivery contractor for 26 years and that piece of advice was given to me when I first started. Was it good advice? Just ask any grano worker how he feels about a load of concrete showing up 15 minutes before the time he ordered it, and you'll get your answer.
Regards,
Geoff.

Inverter Weld
Mine was a no brainer. I spend all day touching inverter welders.... I spend most of the night dreaming about inverter welders. Sometimes I get distracted with gas turbines.
Cheers

G'day all
When a young tacker my father gave me a personal nickname "Qball" that was only used by my parents to me. When you have the first name Quentin, you find that not many people shorten it or develop a nickname from it - usually some other logic is at work.
When I joined this forum, I had to use something, so I went back into my history for it but changed the spelling.
Nothing very significant.
Like many others seem to have found, in this endeavour you fumble around trying to think of something and stumble onto one that is accepted and or not already taken.
One day, I might even have lost enough hair to qualify for this moniker.
Regards
Quentin

totally unimaginative
desbromilow is Des Bromilow - not real imaginative is it?
I use other psuedonymns on other forums, but mostly to avoid conflict fallout - sitting on a news forum, it doesn't matter what you think of the poli-ticks of OZ, SOMEONE wil take it personally, and offensive - even if it is simply to suggest all poli-tick learn and practise the same manners whilst representing me, as what they do to gain my vote.
Since my eng/mech/elec/other forums are not so heated, I have no problem disclosing my true identity.

Nothing cryptic about my name, just my first name and last initial.

Bit late I know but I have been too busy to do much more than look at current subscriptions. Look at not read! I have only been reading the EBay / Auctions thread regularly.
My name as I believe I explained in my GDay post or summat, is based on the fact that I used to work for an engineering company when a lot younger. This is where I got my love of working with metal. This is the "eng" part. The old and new are references to my old work in engineering and my new found work as a hobbiest now that I have the space for equipment and the luck mostly to obtain it.
Seems to be more imaginative than most LOL. Oops, there go the tickets.

HI ALL,
Well My User Name is quite simple steran50 it consists of the the first 3 letters of My first (stewart) and last Name (rankin) the 50 however doesn't mean anything. Perhaps I should change the 50 to 70 for 1970 the Year I was Born. I have thought about changing my User Name to something else but, I don't know what to though. How does one change their User Name anyway if we want to ?.All The Best steran50 Stewart
The shortest way to do many things is to do only one thing at once.
