I agree phone is the wrong term.

But I reckon they are useful for much more than taking photos.
I also use the camera quite a lot because its handy but if I really want to take proper photos I still use a proper camera.

The greatest use by far for my mobile is as a portable audio device. I only have about 40 music "albums" on there at the mo (usually I have around double that) because I am gradually my old phone with the dud battery into an MP3 player for use in the shed.

I do get through about 3 audio books a week while walking the dogs, driving and laying awake at night - I haven't read an actual paper book all the way through since ~2013?

The other thing I use it quite a bit for is its measurement capability e.g. the Sound Pressure level meter Although I have non-phone versions of the same meters I'm not carrying those around with me all the time. The and the air flow meter, tilt meter and vibration analyser get occasional use.

I really dunno why they're not called "occasionally communication enabled cameras." It'd be more acurate...
perhaps we should refer to them by their proper tag
    voice communication enabled pocket computer

as to being useless outside the city limits
assuming that your Katoomba location doesn't mean that you're trying to use the thing half way up the Furber Stairs, I'm guessing that your problems are mostly related to your service provider.

hating selfies more than Collingwood could still be true, that is unless you like selfies?

It is a sad fact of life that those who live in metro areas never understand the communication problems that living outside those areas present. The south coast of NSW is one big no cell area apart from the towns.

Ian, I'm not a football fan, never been to a game (or played - it was compulsory at school) since High School, so IMHO hating a team is ridiculous. Probably puts me at odds with most of the population but I can live with that.

But because of family likes I've got a soft spot for Melbourne Storm and Collingwood but I hate with a vengeance stupid people that think they can play golf.

I was playing with the logic.

    as in
    "I am a Collingwood fan"
"I don't hate selfies more than I hate Collingwood"
therefore "I am a fan of selfies."

It has nothing to do with whether you play or like AFL, or any other football code.

sorry, but I can't agree with you

when I switched my service from Optus to Telstra, I noticed a distincn improvement in coverage in country NSW.

places like between Cooma and Dalgety, between Tarcutta and Holbrook, between Urana and Narrandera

Having spent the day on a tourist railway, I hate the way countless visitors take "selfies".
A lot of overseas visitors do not even have the courtesy to ask before they get on the engine to either take a "selfie" or have an image recorded by someone else. I am quiet happy to take an image for them, and if it is digital take another if they do not like the first.

Some places have even gone as far as banning "selfie sticks", not such a bad idea.

As for the poll, I have not take an image of my self that I am happy with. See way too many people trying to record themselves to want to really try.

As for Collingwood, how about the whole AFL. Not sure who my team is playing this weekend, what day, or what jumper they are wearing. It is all dollar driven. Give them the chance and they would have a game every day of the week.

I travelled the south coast of NSW as a job and I can't agree with you, the networks simply do not exist.

I don't know of anyone with better coverage than Telstra. The problem is we don't have reliable connectivity until halfway down the mountain. Heading the other way even unreliable connectivity is a flip of the coin.

The south coast of NSW would have go be one of the more difficult mobile coverage places on the planet.

comparatively few people live there and the settlements are separated by relatively high ridges.

My country NSW experience is mostly the north coast, southern highlands and west of the Hume highway

My wife has one, I threw mine in the bin, battery and sim removed, when I retired in 2005.

Have used hers a few times when overseas, otherwise I don't give a rats. Absolutely can't stand selfie sticks or people who constantly watch/use the phone when walking across a street or along a footpath. Sadly, they may realise eventually that life has passed them by and all they will have left is a handful of screen.
