An impressively neat & precise-looking job, Stewie!

I reckon the dampening effect of a well-fitted wooden bed gives woodies a lovely silky feel, when everything comes together well. I was using my new small Bull-oak smoother today to finish off some figured Blackwood. Even with it's standard pitch & single-iron blade, it did a lovely job, far surpassing the #4 Bailey I tried first....

Thanks Ian. I agree with you that a well bedded woodie will outperform a Stanley plane. I think that a lot of woodworkers feel woodie's are difficult to use and maintain. In reality that is far from the case.

Thanks Richie. No the use of toothing blades are old school. But were designated at a much greater bed angle and were used to work the surface of wood veneers prior to adhering with hide glue. I purchased toothing blades some years ago from the U.K. and are all stamped with the original maker and are new old stock. From memory I purchased about a dozen.

Hi Matt. Yes I plan to make a new toothing plane to replace the 1 sold. It was a top notch plane to use. I will not be submitting a new tutorial post on its build. That goes the same with future backsaw builds. I believe I have covered all the critical areas that needed to be covered to assist others with their own backsaw builds. But your most welcome to can always pm me if require further assistance.

What did you finish the Merbau with ? I saw you mentioned iron oxide stain, but you've managed to put down a really beautiful fnish on a species that I've long held in contempt (perhaps erroneously !!!!)

Hi John. Paste wax was all that was used to bring out the final sheen.

The paste wax really has given the Merbau a lovely sheen or lustre.

I really like the crisp lines you've maintained on that plane. Beautiful.
