One reason B&S engines get thrown away is that they have somewhat short valve guides, with insufficient purchase in the block. After much use, the valve guides get hammered deeper into the block by the force of valve closing, and the valves no longer close completely. In lieu of throwing it away, the valve stems can be ground shorter to restore contact. Careful grinding is the order of the day, as too much relief will allow hammering of the cam against the stem, which is bad for both.
