It has just occurred that following on from Matt's post above this is going to sound like a moan, but it is not.
I was trying to see if I had some large enough Bull Oak. The billets tend to split themselves
P1060431 (Medium).JPGP1060432 (Medium).JPG
To gain maximum figure the billet should be backsawn, but the tendency to split is in the quarter sawn direction. This pic shows the quarter sawn face with large dark patches
P1060433 (Medium).JPG
While this pic shows the backsawn face on the same billets.
P1060434 (Medium).JPG
They are easily split
P1060437 (Medium).JPGP1060438 (Medium).JPG
The short answer was that nothing was large enough to produce a handle. Not completely wasted time as I need some small square sticks to make handles for some butcher's steels.

Yesterday I had a little more success with the Gidgee. I worked away at the billet with my large planer (It is nearly an inch wider than my jointer) and a 9¼" circular saw using a 6" jointer at times to square up the faces. My ancient Triton table saw does not have enough depth of cut and cutting this thickness on my bandsaw with Gidgee just isn't going to work so I used the hand held circular saw.

Nothing ever quite matches up when cut from two sides. I tried to recover even the smallest pieces of this precious timber.

At least there is a handle there.

I may need to have a little chat Paul,
There’s a few now using Gidgee, I wonder If we get more points for using a Gidgee shaving.
Cheers Matt.

Well I am still collecting materials. It is amazing what you can find.
I am reminded of Dean Martin's reflection on people who don't drink. He commented that he felt sorry for them as they get up in the morning knowing the day isn't going to get any better.
I'm that way with the storage of materials. It is a matter of sheer pleasure when you find in amongst the detritus of a lifetime of hoarding you come across something you can actually use.
I joked just recently on the Friday Lunchtime Prattle that I am building the planes around the cap screw and although it was said with some degree of jest, it is partly true. The cap iron and screw are the areas I have most difficulty with in terms of sourcing material. I found this lot tonight. The real treasure was the half inch rod. I didn't know I had that and would have bought some on Tuesday when went to Toowoomba. I knew I had the brass flatbar.....somewhere.

The aluminium is solid but with holes if that is not a contradiction in terms and could be used at about 15mm thick. I also have some stainless steel that would be suitable (not pictured), but no brass thick enough.
P1060445 (Medium).JPG
I also found these round brassy looking things (they are very mildly magnetic ) which just happen to have a ½" hole in them.

Just making all the preparations.

The other option for the cap iron ( I have just thought that cap iron made of aluminium is something of an oxymoron) is stainless steel. This is some that is 8mm thick.

Pictured with the intended blades: 2" for the bevel up and two blades at 2 3/8" for the high angle. The second blade is a leaf spring and will have to be cut down a little in the width. I am making two blades to evaluate the difference.

It cleans up on the fibre wheel (just down one side for demonstration purposes) quite reasonably and could be put on a buffing wheel for a bit more glamour.

Maybe they will have to be pretty to be in with a ghost of a chance . The cap irons (still not really iron ) will have to be cut to length and width.

I couldn't help but notice that quite a lot of participants are producing drawings. I have indeed heard that many people do this when designing things. I can see that my lack of drawings is going to place me at a distinct disadvantage. So I am hereby remedying that situation.
I am not skilled at drawing so you will have to forgive the early and primitive nature:
My first plane drawing. Should appeal to at least one judge (I am using precision targeting to maximise appeal):

Some thoughts on clamping mechanisms for the cap iron:
The cap Iron.jpg
Having swotted up on the ergonomics of planes I think we may be better off approaching from a diametrically opposed position and redesign the perfect man: It may be easier. Not wanting to be branded sexist, I did consider portraying a woman, and I have to say there were some mighty fine candidates, but in the end I stuck with the masculine version:
Fiting the man to the plane (2).jpg
Sorry, Forgot to mention it is written in Latin and you have to use a mirror: For secrecy you understand. Otherwise the rascals here will know everything.
I thought the judges might like to see another project I am working on. The giant crossbow. When complete it will have a range of Brisbane, Sydney and Perth.
design-for-a-giant-crossbow-1482.jpg
I am hoping the judges will see this for it's scientific and technical qualities rather than the military capability.
More drawings to follow (in a couple of years).
Regards
Paul
PS: I am aware of an awful lot of terrible puns frequenting this thread so just to let you know that from now on my posts will be plane and simple.Bushmiller;

Paul, it’s most excellent to see you are aligning your atheism with the the state and the church most excellent.
That should clearly put you in front line.
And your drawings, I’m certain I’ve seen someone ripping your designs off somewhere else.
You need to be conscious of intellectual property
Cheers Matt.

I haven't been able to draw ever since I ate my crayons.
I got sick of sitting around doing nothing - so I took up meditation.

I got a little bit screwed up today:
A bit of 1/2" rod
P1060507 (Medium).JPG
They are a clearance fit so will be soldered and pinned.
P1060509 (Medium).JPG
A shallow head for the bevel up plane and a thicker head for the high angle.
P1060510 (Medium).JPG
They will have a timber cover on them too, but ran out of time and light. The threads are probably much too long, but it is easier to cut them down than lengthen them.
