Thanks Ewan, Dougie had been, ummm 'restored' before I got it and consequently I have to go through it when I can. Pretty much all that is left is scraping the slides now. With the gears, I reckon alignment is our only hope as with the intermittent loads we are pretty much going to get noise from the tooth 'slap'. Better alignment has certainly stopped the grinding that used to happen which could affect the cut.
I will try to work out a way to hone my tool and get rid of the grind marks. I used the diamond wheel on the rig I made to sharpen the scraper and it came out nice
Thanks Bob, I am a big fan of the 'KISS' principle. On the initial set up, I kept the QCTP loose and the tool holder floating on its dovetails then put the insert on the 1" shaft using judicious movement of the crosslide then tightened everything up. Remove the insert and replace it with the drill. You would be correct, the unbreakable Metabo but really whatever could go in there, it's just a matter of machining the split ring to the largest you will need and machining split inserts for smaller units. Using the DRO I can get any PCD.
The Indexer is another project. I had in mind a shaft or pipe mounted in the back of the headstock spindle with a spiral of holes and a sliding detent pin instead of a plate with holes but am still undecided.
At the moment of course I am restricted to either a 3 hole or 4 hole circle .

Do you mean the axis of the curve? I was going to say parallel to the cut (ram), but I checked John's photos and my tool and they're both across the cut. To be honest though I don't think it would matter. There does need to be a slight curve, with some relief (the curve angles up). The approach angle is not critical either. 30 - 40 degrees is a nice range, measured from the cut axis. I hope John will not mind me linking one of his pics here. I notice he doesn't appear to use rake, while I do.
