Sadly not applicable in my case, all the timber was flat on one face (off the bandsaw and straight on the edge against the fence. I think being very old iron bark the blade just met a bit it didn't like. It was the remains of having resawn old telegraph pole sections.

Old telegraph pole??? Is it possible that there was an imbedded nail or screw that the blade caught on?

If the miter saw is a SCMS, then the cutting action is to pull the blade all the way out, push the blade down, push the blade away from through the timber making the cut.

Absolutely not, there was no damage to any of the three saws we used; this was just one of those incidents we wish didn't happen. The wood was so hard we had to stop bandsawing at one stage as it kept tripping the circuit breaker.
