hiroller there is a guy in Dandenong that is selling marine ply sheets for $10 a half sheet. But its that tropical hardwood stuff. Course grained and splintery.

I am thinking that while a 15mm sheet is costly. I could make a drill press table, a shooting board and all kinds of jigs from a sheet of baltic.

Sounds like a plan. The plywood suppliers that cut to size will have an off cuts bin also.

Rather than clamping a wooden table to a the DP table I use a X-Y vice hard bolted to the DP and when needed I clamp a wooden table in that.
    See here https://www.woodworkforums.com/f65/dr.../2#post1800079
That way I can swap between wood an metal a bit quicker.

Hi Bob - This drill press is exclusively for wood. I do not work with metal.

Even if I was only using a DP for wood, I would still set a DP table up on an XY mechanism of some sort.
This enables the work/.table/fence/clamps to be moved in the X-Y directions by very small amounts.
This means that fences or work pieces can be positioned approximately and then precisely with the X-Y mechanism.

I realise that XY mechanisms are not cheap but if you ever see one going cheap they are worth grabbing.

The capstan came back from the powder coaters today.

So I threaded in a 1/2" BSW bolt as a temp handle and tried drilling a few holes.

I had the VFD at 40 herz??? and using a sharp bit caused the wood to burn.

So I reduced the speed to 30, then to 20 then 10 before the bit would stop burning the wood.

However using a 1/2" bit will cause the spindle & motor to stall a small 1/16" bit will drill but slowly.

I am not sure were to look for the problem or how to solve it. Here is what I have thought of so far:

    • The VFD needs to configured correctly.
    • The single to three phase VFD is simply under powering the three phase motor (Not enough torque at low RPM).
    • I did not assemble the spindle assembly correctly and something is just slipping under load (Doubtful since the stall happens at the motor).

so..... is the rotation of the drill bits / spindle in the correct direction?

Steve - hole in one - the bit is spinning anti-clockwise.

Now how do I get a three phase motor to spin in the opposite clockwise direction?

When you explain remember I am an electronic moron.

So I need to swap the location of two out of three of the following wires. But which ones?

Any two. Easier to swap at the VFD.
Those were the droids I was looking for.

Just a quick note to say thanks. A simple change of the wire caused the motor to rotate in the correct direction. I was able to drill holes with ease. I will take some photos of the drill press and something I am working on tomorrow.

I hope to shoot some video as I have a few questions that maybe I need help with.
